Meet GW

The Founder of GW Performance Horses, LLC

Wyatt “GW” Bumgarner is a North Carolina entrepreneur, western sports producer, and founder of GW Performance Horses LLC. Based in Granite Falls, North Carolina, GW has built a recognizable brand within the equine industry through horse training, large-scale barrel racing events, youth involvement, and charitable western industry initiatives across the Southeast. Raised in a rodeo family, GW grew up surrounded by western sports and the horse industry. While his family’s roots were in bull riding and roping, horses quickly became his passion. At just 19 years old, he moved to Louisiana where he trained horses across multiple disciplines including track racing, cutting horses, jumpers, and barrel horses while traveling throughout the western United States competing at major events. One of the most influential horses in GW’s career was Fesses Hit, known as “Louie,” a talented barrel horse trained and futuritied by the late Scott Kennedy. Louie helped shape GW both as a competitor and horseman, teaching him the value of patience, humility, and consistency at the highest levels of competition. After losing Louie in a devastating barn fire in 2018, GW became even more determined to build a program focused on horsemanship, mentorship, and opportunity within the western industry. Today, GW Performance Horses is known not only for training and competition, but also for producing some of the Southeast’s fastest-growing western events, including the Foothills Barrel Classic, Cowgirls With A Cause, the Foothills Spring Soirée, and St. Jude’s Showdown. Through these events, GW has combined western sports with community impact by supporting charitable initiatives, sponsoring youth competitors, teaching youth-based clinics, and helping grow the western industry throughout North Carolina and beyond. In addition to his work within the equine industry, GW serves as the NBHA NC03 District Director and sits on the Board of Directors for the Appalachian Disaster Coalition, continuing his commitment to leadership, community involvement, and service throughout North Carolina. Whether he is mentoring riders, producing events, training horses, or building partnerships within the industry, GW’s goal remains the same: to create opportunities for both horses and people while helping grow the future of western sports.

Why did I start?

I started GW Performance Horses because I wanted to create more than just another place to ride or compete. I wanted to build an environment where riders, competitors, business owners, and families from all backgrounds felt welcome and had an opportunity to grow within the western industry.

Growing up, I was fortunate to have people in this industry who took the time to help me, guide me, and give me opportunities they didn’t have to give. They cared deeply about the future of western sports and believed in helping the next generation succeed. Those experiences shaped not only the horseman I became, but also the person I became, and they inspired me to do the same for others.

This industry has given me some of the greatest opportunities, lessons, and relationships of my life, and I’ve dedicated my life to giving back to it. Through training, clinics, competitions, and large-scale events, my goal has always been to create a place where people can safely hone their craft, pursue their goals, promote their businesses, and be part of something bigger than themselves.

Whether someone is entering their very first barrel race, chasing professional goals, building a business, or simply looking for a supportive community, I want GW Performance Horses to be a place where they feel encouraged, respected, and inspired to keep growing.

Western sports are built on hard work, grit, community, and passion — and that’s exactly what GW Performance Horses was founded on.

TESTIMONIALS

We recently met Wyatt for the first time at a barrel race where our daughter was trying a new horse with known alley issues. Wyatt took it upon himself to step in and really help our daughter the entire day. His valuable input and encouraging manner were truly heaven sent and so greatly appreciated!! Seeing how Wyatt so selflessly stepped in to mentor and assist our daughter for no other reason than the love of the sport and ensuring the upcoming generation has a great role model makes him a 10 out of 10 forever in our book!!!

We met Wyatt recently at a barrel race and I wanted to say that I was very pleased with how smoothly his show ran. He is very supportive and encouraging to all the participates. He went out of his way to make sure that all the details were taken care of. I was very impressed with how he does business. You can really tell that he puts his whole heart into what he does and he loves it!! Thank you for being a positive role model for all the kids out there and adults as well!! We appreciate you!

Wyatt is very soft handed and stays calm breaking horses. He also puts horses first on a daily basis.

He runs 2 of my horses, because I know he loves them as much as I do.

I highly recommend him for your breaking and training horses

Debb Farris
